Two men wearing Halloween masks who tried to rob a Brookfield convenience store were given a real fright this morning when a courageous customer doused them with a cup of hot coffee and wrestled one would-be thief to the ground.
The men, who wore masks and black sweatshirts, walked into the Cumberland Farms on Route 9 at 6 a.m. demanding money from the clerk behind the counter, said Brookfield Police Sgt. Christopher Welsh.
A fast-acting customer inside the store, who had just picked up a hot cup of joe, first tossed steaming coffee in the face of one would-be thief, Welsh said.

“He intervened by physically trying to hold them down,” Welsh said. “He ended up physically grabbing them and got into a tussle with them.”
The two men ran away without getting any money, he said.
“He saved the day,” said a Cumberland Farms worker, who declined to give her name and referred all other questions to a Cumberland Farms corporate spokesperson.
A message left with the Cumberland Farms corporate office was not immediately returned.
Police have surveillance video of the incident and believe the same costumed crooks robbed a Cumberland Farms in Amherst earlier this morning as well as a Brimfield Cumberland Farms on Thursday, Welsh said.
