Stella Melsa says she's not the best singer, but whatever Stella may lack in vibrato she certainly makes up in her sense of humor. Melsa is celebrating her 105th birthday. "I'm an old country girl," she says. Stella has been living in Tama County her whole life.
During he depression she was raising chickens and selling eggs for three cents a dozen. I told her she could get two bucks a dozen today. "Two dollars a dozen, i cant believe it! " Stella exclaims.
Stella doesn't necessarily follow inflation or how well our dollar fares in international markets, but she does remember quite well the challenges the country faced when the unemployment rate was more than 20%. "We did without a lot during the depression," Stella says.
Currently the unemployment rate is about 6 percent. Stella says even though times may seem rough now it's still hard to top The Great Depression. Maybe that's how she got such a great, sense of humor... Stella recalls, "So, i think I came out of the depression....depressed!!!
